Road Maintenance
Outside of city limits, you can be sure that the DeKalb Township Road Crew is working hard to ensure the highest quality roads and service to our residents.
Vehicle Road Permits
Vehicle permits are required for overweight/over limit vehicles traveling on DeKalb Township roads.
To request an overweight permit please follow these simple steps:
- Request your permit through either our Online Request or by PDF Request.
- The online form submits automatically when you click submit.
- If using the PDF version, please email the PDF to kgumino@dekalbtownship.org and csmith@dekalbtownship.org.
- Once your request has been reviewed and approved by Highway Commissioner Craig Smith, your signed permit will be emailed to you.
** NOTE PERMITS ARE ONLY ISSUED DURING NORMAL BUSINESS HOURS **
Please allow 24 hours for vehicle permit approval and proceed only after receiving your approved permit.
In the spring, weight postings go in effect and will be announced and road permits are not issued during those postings. Call for more information during this time if you have questions.
Right-of-Way Permits
Permits are required for utility work in DeKalb Township Right-of-Ways. To request a Right-of-Way permit, please follow these steps:
- Request your permit by completing the Right-of-Way Permit Request below.
- Email the PDF along with required drawings to include location(s), work description(s), utility marker post(s), proposed utility depth, location offsets from right-of-way, centerline, and edge of pavement, and other related items with the permit application to both: csmith@dekalbtownship.org and kgumino@dekalbtownship.org
- Once your permit is reviewed and approved by Highway Commissioner Craig Smith, you will receive the approved/signed permit via email.

The Illinois Commerce Commission is a good resource where residents can report complaints of rough railroad crossings, relocation and household mover complaints, or utility and One Call violations. If you experience any of these issues, simply file a complaint with the Commission and they will investigate.

Township Map
Dekalb Township covers an area of 6 square miles and serves residents living in the City of DeKalb, unincorporated DeKalb, and the southwestern corner of Sycamore. Township boundaries are Lucas Road on the west, Webster Road on the east, Gurler Road on the south and slightly north of Rich Road on the north. Approximately 30 miles of roads within the Township are maintained by the DeKalb Township Road District
